The art of imperfect symmetry

Almost all forms in nature are symmetrical down to the DNA that make up the building blocks of life. My interest in symmetry comes from my interest in anatomy and the natural world where beauty is achieved through balance and structure.

Over the last several years I have been employing a Rorschach (ink blot) technique in my paintings to give me an under layer of acrylic paint that provides me with a symmetrical template to work on in oil paint. I am not looking for perfect symmetry because, as in nature, beauty and personality are described by the quirks and variations that make up the individual.
